In Loving Memory of Robert Angelo Benvin
October 2, 1937 – November 21, 2016
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert Angelo Benvin, a devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and an exceptional athlete, on November 21, 2016. He left this world surrounded by the love of his family in Delray Beach, Florida, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, and passion for life.
Robert was born on October 2, 1937, to John and Ana Benvin in Vrana, Croatia. He was one of eleven children, growing up in a household filled with love, resilience, and strong family values. He had six brothers and four sisters, with whom he shared a deep bond throughout his life.
At a young age, Robert moved to Como, Italy, where he spent ten formative years. His ambition and intellect led him to Varese, Italy, where he completed high school and pursued two years of college. However, driven by dreams of a better future and greater opportunities, he set his sights on America.
A Journey to the United States and a Life Dedicated to Racquet Sports
In 1956, Robert made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States, where he soon found his calling in racquet sports. His talent and dedication led him to work as an assistant tennis professional, training under Jan Kozeluh in Charleston, West Virginia, and later under Doris Hart, a legendary tennis champion, in Spring Lake, New Jersey.
In 1960, Robert was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving his country with honor and discipline. He spent six months stationed at Fort Dix, New Jersey, before being deployed to Goeppingen, West Germany, where he served for eighteen months. His time in the military instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism, resilience, and camaraderie that he carried with him throughout his life.
Upon returning to civilian life in 1963, Robert transitioned to a career in squash, becoming the squash professional at the prestigious Rockaway Hunting Club in Cedarhurst, New York. His passion for racquet sports extended beyond squash, as he also worked as a tennis professional at the Atlantic Beach Club in Atlantic Beach, New York.
Recognizing his business acumen and deep understanding of the industry, Wilson Sporting Goods hired Robert as a tennis and squash sales representative, covering the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut regions. For three years, he excelled in this role, building lasting relationships within the sports community.
A Love Story and a Life of Family Values
Robert’s life took a beautiful turn when he met his soulmate, Dorina Benvin, on a magical 4th of July in New York. Their love blossomed quickly, and they exchanged vows on November 6, 1966, in Mali Lošinj, Croatia. Their marriage was built on unwavering love, mutual respect, and shared values, and together they built a beautiful life.
Always deeply involved in racquet sports, Robert co-founded Century Sports, Inc., which he successfully operated for twenty-five years. His expertise and leadership in the industry made a lasting impact.
A Legacy in Squash and Tennis
A fierce competitor on the court, Robert reached the pinnacle of success in squash. In 1980, he was ranked #1 in the United States and #2 in the world, a testament to his skill, determination, and sportsmanship. His passion for the game and his relentless pursuit of excellence made him a respected figure in the racquet sports community.
Robert’s greatest pride, however, was his children. He instilled strong family values in his daughter Michelle, who built a wonderful family of her own. His son, Richard, inherited his love for tennis, and Robert devoted himself to coaching him. Under his father’s guidance, Richard went on to compete as a professional tennis player, carrying forward the legacy of passion and dedication to the sport.
A Man of Many Passions
Beyond sports, Robert had a deep love for the ocean. An avid fisherman, he found peace and joy in the rhythmic waves, often walking miles along the beach lost in thought. He was a man of intellect, with an insatiable curiosity and a love for reading and engaging conversations. Never one to shy away from expressing his opinions, he was particularly vocal when he witnessed injustice, always standing up for what he believed was right.
A man of extraordinary character, Robert was selfless, always putting others ahead of himself without expecting anything in return. His honesty, humility, and generosity were his defining traits, making him a beloved friend, mentor, and role model.
His Greatest Joy – Family
Robert’s greatest title was “Nonno Bob”, a name lovingly given to him by his cherished grandchildren, Mason and Robert Mayotte. They were his pride and joy, and he adored them with all his heart. The bond they shared was irreplaceable, and they, in turn, deeply loved and cherished him.
On November 6, 2016, Robert and Dorina celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, a milestone that spoke to the depth of their love and unwavering commitment to one another.
